How to start a business in Nigeria: a practical step-by-step guide

Updated 8 October 2026 · 2 min read · By the Invoicer team

To start a business in Nigeria: pick something people already pay for, test it with real customers, register your business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), open a business bank account, set your prices from your true costs, and record every sale and expense from day one.

1. Pick an idea people already pay for

The best first business solves a problem people around you already spend money on. Look at what you can source, make or deliver better, faster or cheaper than what exists. Searches such as "how to start a business with no capital" or "from home" are rising in Nigeria, so many people are looking for the same starting point: start small and prove demand before spending.

2. Test before you spend

3. Choose a structure and register

In Nigeria you can register as a sole proprietorship (business name), a partnership or a limited liability company with the Corporate Affairs Commission. Registration is done online through the CAC portal, where you create an account, check and reserve a name, complete the forms, upload valid ID and pay the fees.

Check before you pay. Fees, forms and requirements change. Confirm the current details on the official CAC website rather than relying on any third-party page, including this one.

Option

Best when

Business name

You are starting alone, want it quick and simple

Limited liability company

You want a separate legal entity, outside investors or larger contracts

4. Open a business bank account

Keep business money apart from personal money from the first day. It makes records cleaner, builds a payment history and makes it easier to prove your income when you need financing.

5. Sort out your tax number and tax obligations

Get a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and check which taxes apply to your type of business and size. Tax rules were updated recently, so confirm the current position with the tax authority or a qualified accountant.

6. Price from your real costs

Add up what each item costs you, including transport, packaging, delivery and fees. Then add the profit you want. Our guide on how to calculate profit margin shows how.

7. Record everything from day one

Every sale, every expense, every item in and out of stock. Records tell you what is actually making money, who owes you and when to reorder. See inventory management for online businesses for how to track stock.

Common questions

Do I need to register before I start selling? Many people test first, then register once sales are steady. Registration is needed for things like a business bank account and larger customers, so do not wait too long.

How much money do I need? It depends on the business. Start with the smallest version that can make real sales.
